As the 2011-2012 season arrives, Coach Dougherty begins his 12th year coaching track at Central Arizona College. He has had the pleasure of coaching on 6 National Championship Teams. During this past 2011 season, the Women’s Track team began a new tradition of competing in Indoor Track and Field. The women promptly qualified a great team and placed second at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships. In 2011, CAC women broke 1 school record and earned 19 All-American honors while finishing second at the NJCAA Outdoor National Championships. In 15 years, no CAC Women’s Track team has ever finished worse than third at Nationals. As in other years, the CAC Women placed very high in the Coaches Association Academic All American Team competition, this year placing first with 13 team members and a GPA of 3.74.
On the track, Coach Dougherty primarily works with the throwers, women high jumpers and the multi event athletes. He has worked with 29 National Champion throwers, 3 National Champion decathletes and 1 National Champion high jumper. Coach Dougherty’s throwers hold National Junior College Records in the men’s hammer (227-0), women’s hammer (198-0) and the women’s discus (183-4). Former CAC decathlete Maurice Smith holds the National Junior College Record in the decathlon with a score of 7617 as well. Coach Dougherty was voted NJCAA Coach of the Year in 2007.
Before arriving at Central Arizona College, Coach Dougherty spent 12 years coaching at Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona. From 1988 to 2000, Dougherty coached 25 All-American throwers and multi-event athletes. Four of these throwers were National Champions. Both the men and women at Pima College won ACCAC titles and the women’s team won Regional titles as well. During this time, the women’s team finished as high as fourth at Nationals.
Coach Dougherty is a faculty member at Central Arizona College in the Math Department. He received his master's in math education from Northern Arizona University (2003) and his Bachelor of Science in physical education from the University of Arizona (1991). Tony and his wife Lisa have two children: Collin (12) and Samantha (7).
