7 Vaqueros sign Letters of Intent for the 2010 season
2008 Season in Review (by Randy Huggler):
The 2008 season was a memorable one for the Vaquero baseball team, capped by a third-place finish at the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, CO. The Vaqueros won their final six regular-season games to earn a berth in the Region I playoffs. CAC went 4-0 in that tournament before winning all three of its games in the Western District Finals to earn a trip to the JUCO World Series for the fourth time in the program's rich history. The Vaqueros' final mark of 46-22 represented a tie for the second-most wins in school history.
Five Vaqueros were named to the All-JUCO World Series team, including 2008 returnees Xorge Carillo (catcher) and Jimmy Patterson (outfielder/pitcher). Another 2009 returnee, Kevin Lovelace (shortstop) was named MVP of the Region 1 tournament. Pitcher Josh Spence was an NJCAA All-American, and also won a Rawlings Gold Glove award, along with teammate Christian Johnson (outfielder). Spence, Carillo, Johnson and Tim Steggall (second base/outfield) were first-team All-ACCAC and All-Region 1 selections.
Also, the Vaqueros set an all-time NJCAA record with a .977 team fielding percentage, a team batting mark of .336 and team ERA of 3.04.
The return of several prominent players from the 2008 squad combined with an influx of talented newcomers has created optimism for the 2009 season.
