Health Information Management Employment Outlook

Employment opportunities

HIM professionals work in almost 40 different sectors of the health care industry and hold nearly 200 different job titles.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of HIM professionals is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2016.

Work Settings

These include physician group offices and clinics, long-term care facilities, insurance companies, government agencies and home care providers.  In fact, employment opportunities exist in any organization that uses patient data or health information, such as pharmaceutical companies, law firms, and health product vendors.

Positions and Job Titles

HIM Department Director; HIM System Manager, Transcriptionists, Data Quality Manager, Information Security Officer, Consultant, Health Data Analyst, Insurance Claims Analyst, Records Technician Specialist, Clinical Coding Specialist, Physician Practice Manager, Patient Information Coordinator.


On top of strong job prospects, competitive salaries also await HIM graduates.  More than half of new HIM graduates start with salaries in the $20,000 to $30,000 range. Five years out, many are earning $40,000 to $65,000.
