PHOENIX - Central Arizona College's Maricopa Campus, the first construction phase of which was completed in July 2013, has been recognized as the "Best Education Project" of the past year by the Arizona Commercial Real Estate (AZRE) Magazine.

The publication announced the honor during its Ninth Annual RED Awards reception. The RED Awards recognize the most notable commercial real estate projects of 2013 and the construction teams involved. AZRE held an open call for nominations and more than 100 projects were submitted by architects, contractors, developers and brokerage firms in Arizona. CAC's Maricopa Campus beat out other projects such as Arizona State University's new facility for its W.P. Carey School of Business, McCord Hall, and the university's new fitness center at its Downtown Phoenix Campus.

"The Maricopa Campus is a one-of-a-kind educational facility for the citizens of Pinal County," says Chris Wodka, CAC's vice president of financial and administrative services. "A lot of care and thought went into every detail of its design and construction, and this award is a reflection of that."

Designed by SmithGroupJJR, Phoenix and built by CORE Construction, the Maricopa Campus, which boasts nearly 77,000 square feet of space, brings sustainability and education to the forefront. The three initial campus buildings are sustainable "academic sheds" designed to keep the students cool from the hot desert sun throughout the year. The building materials are utilitarian, natural, low-maintenance and recycled. Nothing is wasted for aesthetics. There is one central water plant that feeds the three new buildings on campus. The campus is designed in a manner that considers the campus's future growth and saves water consumption by 28 percent.

Currently, students attending the Maricopa Campus can complete general education requirements necessary for university transfer, or pursue a number of associate degrees or certificates in programs such as culinary arts, administration of justice, business, elementary education and biotechnology.
