CAC Wind Ensemble, Handbell Choir take center stage at the Pence this Sunday, April 11, at 3 p.m.

PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. - The Central Arizona College Community Wind Ensemble and Handbell Choir will take center stage at the Don P. Pence Center for Visual & Performing Arts this Sunday, April 11, at 3 p.m., at CAC’s Signal Peak Campus.

Tickets for the show are just $5 for adults and available at no cost to any student with an ID. Tickets may be purchased in advance by calling the CAC Cashier’s Office at 520-494-5240. Cash sales are available the day of the show.

The concert will feature two local composers and a flute soloist and will begin with Fanfare and Dedication composed by Ted Willhite, a resident of Arizona City.

“Ted is the concertmaster of the wind ensemble and an adjunct professor in the Central Arizona College music department,” Rick Moore, CAC’s professor of instrumental music and the band director, explained. “He was commissioned to create this composition for the dedication of a new building in Ruidoso, N.M.”

The ensemble also will feature a new composition by local composer and Casa Grande resident Russell Shannon entitled Theme and Variations. Shannon moved to Arizona in 1976 after serving as a band director in Wisconsin for 31 years.

“Russell has composed several pieces that have been performed by the ensemble over the past 15 years,” Moore said. “It took him close to 10 years to complete this selection. This will be its premier performance.”

The featured soloist for the concert is flautist Joshua White, the band, choir and Mariachi band director at Santa Cruz Valley Union High School in Eloy. He is a graduate of Santa Cruz Valley Union High School and received his bachelor’s in music education from Grand Canyon University in 2005. White will receive his master’s of education in human relations from Northern Arizona University this May.

“Joshua has performed on flute and tenor saxophone with the Grand Canyon University Wind Ensemble and jazz ensembles,” Moore said. “He also has performed on flute and piccolo with the University of New Mexico Wind Symphony and University Orchestra.”

On Sunday, White will be performing Variations and Theme for Flute and Concert Band.

In addition to the special guests, the CAC Wind Ensemble will perform numerous selections that will delight the audience, including a traditional march, a Strauss waltz medley, and big band swing music.

The CAC Handbell Choir, under the direction of Diane Rubio, is a favorite ensemble in Pinal County.

“Not only is the music beautiful and interesting,” Moore shared, “but the group provides a terrific visual effect as the members work as a true team to create a wonderful musical presentation.”
