Central Arizona College announces our most recent 'Athletes of the Week'
PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. – Central Arizona College has announced its most recent Athletes of the Week as nominated by the head coaches of each program.
Women’s Athletes of the Week
April 12 – Freshman sprinter Tameka Williams (Basseterre, St. Kitts) led the Vaqueras to a strong showing at the Sun Angel Classic at Arizona State University. She finished second in the long jump competition with a leap of 20 feet, 6.5 inches and now stands first in the NJCAA Division I national rankings.
She also posted a time of 11.42 in the 100 meters to take second place, and she recorded a mark of 23.65 in the 200m. She is ranked second nationally in both sprint events.
April 5 – Sophomore OF Davina Flores (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Foothills) hit .500 with nine stolen bases during a 2-2 week for the CAC softball team. She helped the Vaqueras split a pair of doubleheaders with Eastern Arizona and Arizona Western.
March 22 – Sophomore Kristen Woods (Newberg, OR) – the Grand Canyon Region Champion in barrel racing last year - moved into the number one position for this year after outstanding performances on March 20-21 at the CAC Rodeo Meet.
Feb. 15 - Sophomore C/IF DeeShanalyn Tafiti (Kalaheo, HI/Kauai) went 4 for 7 during a doubleheader sweep of South Mountain on Feb. 13. She hit .571 in the twinbill, smacking a pair of home runs and driving in seven. She led the Vaqueras to a 7-1 win in game one and an 8-3 victory in game 2.
Men’s Athletes of the Week
April 12 – Vaquero freshman OF Nick Carrillo (Glendale, AZ/Sandra Day O’Conner)
During the four games, Carrillo hit .462 by going 6 for 13 with five runs scored, two doubles, one home run and five RBI. He also walked twice.
April 5 – Sophomore OF Bryan Karraker (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle) led the Vaqueros to a 4-1 week by batting .538. He went 7 for 13 with four runs scored and seven RBI.
March 29 – Sophomore OF Jordan Guida (Glendale, AZ/Brophy College Prep) led the Vaqueros to a 4-0 week by hitting .385. He went 5 for 13 with five runs scored, five RBI, a double, two homers and two stolen bases. He also walked three times.
March 22 – Freshman Chase Simon (Florence, AZ) recorded the most individual points for the Vaqueros in CAC’s home meet on March 20-21 after competing in steer wrestling, tie down roping, and team roping. He also placed third overall in the tie down roping and steer wrestling competitions.
March 8 – Freshman SS Sam Lind (Harford, SD/Roosevelt) led the Vaqueros to a 4-0 week by hitting .500 in four starts. He was 7 for 14 with five runs scored, three doubles, one home run and 12 RBI. He walked three times and stole a base.
March 1 - Freshman left-handed pitcher Chris Joyce (Goleta CA/Dos Pueblos) was outstanding on the mound in a 5-0 blanking of Arizona Western on Feb. 27. He allowed just two hits over seven innings of work, striking out 11 and walking just three while tossing the complete-game shutout.
Feb. 15 - Sophomore OF Jordan Guida (Glendale, AZ/Brophy College Prep) batted .600 in four games for the Vaqueros, going 9 for 15 with three runs scored, two doubles, a homer and two stolen bases. He also drove in three runs.
Guida’s offensive explosion was a bright spot during an 0-4 week for the Vaqueros.
