May 15, 2008
CASA GRANDE, Ariz – Casa Grande Union High School senior Brittnie Nilson has been selected for the 2008 Arthur & Mary Faul Agricultural Scholarship at Central Arizona College.
The $500 scholarship was a surprise presentation to Nilson by Central Arizona College Professor of Agricultural Karen Geldmacher on Thursday, April 24, during the high school’s annual Future Farmers of America Banquet.
The award is sponsored by the Central Arizona College Foundation through donations from long-time Coolidge, Ariz., farmers Jim and Mary Faul. Mr. Faul passed away but Mary Faul still resides in Coolidge and continues to support the scholarship.
“Brittnie was selected based on her high school academic achievements, and her agricultural achievements in FFA,” Geldmacher explained. “It includes public speaking, leadership, and earning her Chapter Farmer and State Farmer Awards.”
Students are eligible for the scholarship if they plan on attending Central Arizona College’s agricultural program. Nilson plans on her major field of study being agricultural science and hopes to pursue a career as an agricultural advisor or nutritionist.
A four-year member of the Future Farmers of America, Nilson has served as the chapter secretary and vice president during her time with the organization. She participates in public speaking, parliamentary procedure, and entomology and agronomy career development events.
“My involvement with the career development events has taught me several life skills such as public speaking, identifying insects, weeds, seeds and soils, entrepreneurship, management skills and more,” Nilson said.
She has even started two of her own businesses – raising market livestock and containerized plants.
“I have grown up with wonderful family support and that has molded me into the strong, intelligent, hardworking and dedicated person I am today,” she stated.
A student athlete with a grade point average of 3.5, Nilson has been a varsity athlete on the volleyball and swim teams at Casa Grande.
Nilson also is a member and competitor for DECA (Delta Epsilon Chi Association), an international association of high school and college students studying marketing, management and entrepreneurship in business, finance, hospitality and marketing sales and service.
