Leadership Development

Adaptive Leadership

This course raises leaders' awareness of the differences among people and situations.  It teaches leaders how to tailor their approaches based on their team members' motivations, personality styles, the organizational environment, and the situation.  By better meeting the needs of each individual, leaders create higher levels of engagement and organizational results.

Essentials of Leadership

Open to all supervisors and above.  This foundation course teaches leaders how to get results through people.  During the course, they attain the tools necessary for a successful "leadership journey."  Learners acquire a set of proven interaction skills, discover seven Leadership Imperatives key to meeting today's challenges, and realize their role as a catalyst leader who inspires others to act.

Supervisory & Management Skills

First Time Supervisor/Manager Training


This workshop will provide tools necessary for success as a new supervisor or manager.  Topics include leadership styles, employment law, ethics, organization and work planning, motivating employees, job satisfaction, delegation and coaching for performance.

 

Supervisory Development Educational Series (S.D.E.S.)

This series of modules will help supervisors and managers better understand the college's procedures and applicable laws.  The modules can be attended in any order.  This series is open to all employees of the District.  Attendees need not currently be assigned in a supervisory role.

    This program focuses on the college environment related to service skills, teamwork, problem prevention and many other topics that will help you and the campus move to a higher level of excellence.  The course is broken into three modules and all three must be attended to complet the program:

    Prevention of Harassment and Workplace Violence

    Join our guest speaker, a talented trial attorney, to learn more about harassment and workplace violence.  This session promises to be an engaging, fun, and eye-opening experience!

    Faculty Development & Processes

    Academic Honesty (1 credit)

    This course covers the "in's" and "out's" of copyright law and plagiarism, focusing on electronic sources and how students use them.

    Advanced Techniques in Blackboard (1 credit)

    This companion course to Teaching on the Web using Blackboard explores advanced features including Assessment Tools, Virtual Classroom, Advanced Control Panel and Troubleshooting Basics. (Pre-requisite: Distance Learning Concepts, Teaching on the Web using Blackboard)

    All About Acres (no credit)

    This course explains the features and functions of ACRES.  Attendees will learn how to navigate, change settings, create and delete forms, and modify or edit proposals.

    Assessments and Activities (1 credit)

    This course explores the process and concepts of fair assessment and methods of measuring the student's progress.

    Basic Technology (1 credit)

    This course will introduce the basic concepts of technology, including hardware, software and networking.  Participants will gain foundational knowledge that will be applicable to course development, delivery and troubleshooting.

    Classroom Management Techniques/Facilitating Classroom Discussions (1 credit each)

    These courses will be taught simultaneously, with one credit awarded to each.  Classroom Management Techniques presents the techniques to teach in a secondary and post secondary environment conducive to learning with a focus on diversity, learning styles, behavior patterns, and the physical or virtual aspects of the classroom in any modality.  Facilitating Classroom Discussions focuses on facilitating, conducting, and managing quality academic discussions for faculty teaching across modalities.

    Critical Thinking for Faculty (1 credit)

    This course will cover critical thinking strategies that will enhance the faculty member's teaching experience and provide exercises to use in online courses that will lead the student to critical thinking in the absence of face-to-face instruction.

    Curriculum Process (no credit)

    This course provides an in-depth look at the curriculum process at CAC.

    Distance Learning Concepts (1 credit)

    This course explores the history and concepts of a variety of distance learning modalities, addressing the advantages and complications of each.

    Facilitating Academic Discussions (1 credit)

    This course focuses on online discussions, but the information gained in this course will help faculty in any academic setting improve the quality of academic discussions.  Participants will create discussion questions and participate in discussions on a variety of topics.

    Grant Writing for Faculty (no credit)

    This workshop identifies the grant writing process, from start to finish.  Attendees will learn why we write grants, finding grants, dealing with the Request for Proposal, the structure of grant proposals, writing proposals, and what to do if the grant is funded.

    How to Change your F2F Course to a Hybrid Course (1 credit)

    This course presents an analysis of content components, engagement, time-on-task and workload issues related to seat time.  Participants will learn to create academically rigorous courses with online components that meet or exceed seat time requirements.

    Instructional Design for Online Classes (1 credit)

    This course prepares faculty to design curriculum materials appropriate for online delivery.  Participants will create learning outcomes and standards for an online course, design appropriate activities for online delivery and review standard curriculum formats.

     Learning and Development Theory (1 credit)

    This course will explore the differences between pedagogy (teacher driven learning) and andragogy (student driven learning), and how to implement more andragogical practices into the curriculum, thus ensuring higher success rates with our adult learners.

    Library Trends, Resources, and Technology (1 credit)

    This course will provide faculty with the tools needed to utilize the college library, taking advantage of the trends in the areas of technology, information literacy, and faculty/library collaborations.

    Maximizing Engagement in Online Learning (1 credit)

    This course covers the ten characteristics of authentic activities designed to enhance and maximize engagement in online learning environments (Reeves, Harrington, & Oliver, 2002).  The course will give faculty the tools necessary to increase student retention in their online and classroom courses and provide students with an authentic learning experience.

    Online Delivery Methods (1 credit)

    This course evaluates the use of the CMS, streaming video and other multimedia tools used to develop learning objects.

    Online Delivery Methods (1 credit)

    This course expands upon the level one class, evaluating the best use of pod-casting, webinars, video conferencing, etc.

    Regulatory Ethics (1 credit)

    This course will cover ADA, FERPA, plagiarism, and other regulatory topics related to teaching in both online and face-to-face environments.  Participants will complete ADA and FERPA tutorials and receive certificates for successful completion of the respective quizzes.

    Syllabus and Lesson Plans (1 credit)

    This course focuses on the development of syllabi and lesson plans across modalities.

    Teaching on the Web using Blackboard (1 credit)

    This course explores the methods, best practices and media tools used to teach an online course using the Blackboard Internet interface. (Pre-requisite: Distance Learning Concepts)

     Webcasting (1 credit)

    This course introduces synchronous delivery and engagement while teaching the mechanics of Webcasting.

    Teaching With iTV (1 credit)

    This course presents the methods, practices, and media tools needed to teach an interactive television (iTV) course.  This is recommended for all faculty planning to teach an interactive television course.  (Pre-requisite: Distance Learning Concepts)

     

    Personal Development

    Communicating & Listening

    When people in the organization are communicating effectively, they are informed and able to participate, contribute, and add value to their jobs.  This course is designed to equip employees with the skills they need to communicate clearly and listen carefully.

    Decision Making

    This course helps employees master a systematic approach to making better-and faster-decisions that will results in more effective performance.


    E-Mail Etiquette

    This course will discuss proper e-mail etiquette in the workplace and offer Do's and Don'ts to work with e-mail.  

    FERPA

    The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 protects the privacy of educational records and give students the right to review their own educational record. CAC has established policies and procedures for the sharing of such information. This session will provide information regarding FERPA and the release of student information.

    Finding Grants


    This workshop will show attendees how to use the Internet to find corporate, foundation, and government grants. It also discusses how to determine whether your project is eligible for funding and what information you need to obtain before deciding whether to apply for a grant.

    Optimizing Team Performance

    Teams bring innovation and productivity to our organization.  But even the most effective and productive teams occasionally hit plateaus or barriers that can prevent them from achieving their full potential.  This course recharges teams by providing: a framework to diagnose strengths and weaknesses, tools to continually improve performance, and a process to build action plans that optimize performance. 

    Recognizing Distressed Students

    This course will help faculty and staff recognize distressed student behaviors.  Attendees will also learn how to handle situations and what resources are available to students in need of assistance.

    Running Effective Meetings

    This course will identify how to plan and organize meetings, prioritize meetings, create agendas, determine meeting length, and properly utilize teleconferencing.  Participants will also learn about attendee types and how to deal with each personality.

    Stress Management

    This course will help students define stress and its mechanisms.  Students will learn how to identify his/her own triggers and how to combat them.

    Time Management Tips

    This course will provide tips on how to manage your time more effectively by determing task importance and using the Time Management Matrix.  Attendees will also assess their time management strengths and weaknesses.

    Using Robert's Rules

    This course will provide a history of Robert's Rules and how CAC uses the Rules for its meetings.  Attendees will obtain a better understanding of meeting terms and the "how's and why's" of Robert's Rules.

    Working Through Conflict

    Open to all employees.  When differences cause people to become angry and closed-minded, the resulting conflict has a negative effect on quality, productivity, cooperation, and communication.  This course discusses how to manage conflict by dealing with differing ideas, interests, and perceptions.

    Systems Training
